Hi, went to use the good old CWA cook book yesterday and saw these old fashioned remedies, dont know whether they work or not but everything else in the book is spot on.
scaly leg= half a cup unsalted fat, 2 tablespoons sulphur and 1 teaspoon kerosine
Mix together the fat, sulphure and kerosine and rub well over the legs of the affected birds. In only mild cases one application is sufficent, but bad cases require 2 or even 3 applications. The disease is caused by a parasite that works under the scales of the legs. It is infectious. The perches should be fumigated.
Colds in Fowls To cure colds in fowls, dip a feather in stockholm tar and touch their drinking water with it. This forms a film on the top and adheres to the beak. If this is done several times a day the epidemic will be checked and all cases cured within a week.
(and I have got no idea why you have to use a feather)

Interesting..... Um probably a dumb question but would unsalted fat be called something else these days and where would you get it?
While we're on the topic of scaly leg mite, has anyone ordered or used that "major scale away" scaly leg remedy thats advertised in the Australasian Poultry magazine classifieds? Sold by 'Major Eggs' in Esperance. I've seen the ad a few times and tempted to try some but thought I'd see if anyone else has used it first.

Hi Steph, I presume when the book was originally printed, fat was usually rendered at home, I can remember my mum doing it. and with scale away I havent used it either as I use Moxydectrin, as this supposedly gets rid of inside and outside parasites.

I would love to know if anybody out there is organised enough to do a yearly planner as to when to worm, de-louse etc at specific times to enhance, best egg production for eating or breeding for WA. Without having to with hold for 4 weeks after treatment. I have been using the poultry powder, but would love to find a natural remedy I always consider myself as a beginner because there is always so much more to learn, so any imput is appreciated

In the old CWA cook books there is a way to keep unfertilized eggs for a long time. This is what you do, In a old pot place 1/2 cup of cooking oil, and about 30 grams of bees wax, over slow heat mix untill melted, Let cool, when cool It should be like butter , Not to soft , not to hard. Using clean eggs wipe a small amount of mixture over egg, Don't miss any of the egg , Pack in cartons, pointy ends down I think ? and keep in a cool place. We have taken 9 dozen to broom storing them in the wardrobe in June 10 weeks later most of the eggs left over are still eatable
