I went to water/feed my 3 ducks this morning and they have just laid their first eggs this morning (4). I was so happy! Now one of them was just killed by a snake This is my second pet in 8 weeks to be killed by a snake. I lost my Peahen on Dec 22. I am SERIOUSLY considering giving them to a nice home because I don't want another to suffer an agonizing death again.

Oh Fancy that's terrible news. I lost one of my Dalmation dogs to a snake bit a couple of years ago...So sad. That's one of the only drwbacks to semi/country life. But perhaps you can find a way to catch the snake rather than have to give up your pets.

Oh fancy, Im so very sorry for you. Thats awful The only thing I could suggest is to catch the snake/s, like lakelands said or limit where you animals roam. Congratulations on your eggs by the way, thats fantastic

oh fancy that is so sad some shires have people that can come out and catch the snake if it is becoming a problem which it sounds like it is and it doesn't cost you anything and then they relocate it

Oh fancy, I am so sorry that you have lost your beautiful pets. I have had snakes in my yard & they are something I am constantly worried about, especially around my daughter. Fortunatley I haven't lost any pets as yet & I hope I never do. I agree with the others, see if you can find someone who can locate & remove the snake. Maybe your local ranger could help.

Hi Fancy, I have had alot of run ins with snakes in the past, the best thing to do is to call CALM, they will put you in touch with a snake handler, who can locate and remove the snake for you, it doesn't cost you anything, but will definately give you peace of mind, you should find that the handler will be a local to your area so if you do happen to find another one it should be removed quite quickly. The only real way to protect your pets, is to put them in a run as big as you can afford, using welded aviary mesh, that is no bigger then 10mm x 10mm, that will guarantee no snakes can get in, apart from the real tiny baby ones, but they are nothing that a drake or a rooster can't solve. I hope you have better luck in the future

Sorry to hear you lost your duck. With snakes around you must be careful yourself i hate the things give me the creeps. I found one under a nest box a while ago it was after a mouse nest.It made me jump i can tell but won't be seeing that one again tho'!. They do turn up when least expected. There is a small gal wire snake/mouse mesh available that you can put around the bottoms of the pens to them keep out.

Thank you for your lovely messages. I have called calm before because we had a snake in a chest of drawers in our shed and he gave us the number for some snake busters company. We rang them and the guy said to us that it is too far to come out and there is no local volunteer in our area. He told my husband what to do and he was terrified but he got rid of it. So we just have to deal with it ourselves because no one will come here. we are in Moore River just north of Perth. I nearly stood on a snake the other night on our patio, I thought it was a stick until I almost trod on it and it slithered. He then met with a shovel.
