Having fed my chooks only poultry mix or crumbles I have bought some meat meal and am looking at making up a mash I can feed them regularly, especially the chicks. That way I can add vitamins or whatever is needed when it seems appropriate. I got the meat meal because a friend said it helps when they are moulting and I have a couple looking very scraggy at the moment, both having just hatched eggs for me. I'd welcome any recipes for a good basic mash, plus ideas on how you mix and store it, or do you make it up daily? Warm water or cold? Milk? Etc.

Hi Mike, I give my lot 2 different mashes, pollard and denkavit mash, this is just for the fluglies, and ones up to POL, and then every 3rd day I give them soaked wheat (that has started to sprout) usually 2 days soaking and then add a bit of meat meal and then feed it to them. meat meal is quite high in protein, all the pens get this including the breeders. Apparently if you give young birds to much protein it can result in overdevelopement of the combs and also i have heard that if your roosts are too close to the roof of the sheds the extra heat also does this as well Dont know how accurate that is but that is what I have been told. I make the pollard up just before it is served LOL and on cold days i do use hot water to make the denkavit. and I only give them enough that will be eaten in a few hours.

Hi wendy, I have the 2 log ins, 1 is the admin log on and the other (H7) is me. I find it easier to keep the 2 separate as the admin has a lot more access than the regular member and I cant stuff anything up that way, also fluglies are chookens that are loosing their fluff and getting their new feathers, they are really ugly at that stage so couldnt call them the uglies so kept the fl from fluff and got fluglies
