Hi all, One of my new chookens has a broken toe. I forgot to put anything in the bottom of the cage that I used to transport him home. And the poor little guy must have slipped in the cage and banged his toe. Has anyone had any experience splinting a broken middle toe. I tried to see if it would splint to one of the outside toes but the distance seems too far. Also does anyone know what would happen if I can't reset it. He seems to be able to walk on it fine right now but it is off at a weird angle

Poor lil guy. I havent had this problem but maybe you could try a bandaid paddle. I've read of people doing this for chicks with curled toes so I dont see why it wouldnt work with a broken toe? Cut a little piece of cardboard a sort of V shape like the chicks foot and put that under the foot, position the toes and then kind of wrap the bandaid over the foot and cardboard... Did that make sense? lol. If you dont reset it, it doesnt matter. The chick will be perfectly fine with a crooked toe. One of my old Silkie hens, Odette has a deformed toe. Its basically an L shape, it has a kink in the middle. She doesnt even notice it and it doesnt give her any trouble

I've just noticed that the ads at the top of this thread are for podiatry and foot braces. Google must identify the title "broken toe" and place what it thinks is appropriate ads. Have to check if this happens on other threads. The wonders of modern technology.

THis happened to a pet Magpie we had once, the best thing we found to fix her was a wire brace and some elastoplast. Its hard to explain but I will try, just in case it helps you. Take a peice of wire (probably plastic covered is best but if not just wrap the ends with elastoplast when you have made the splint) about 30 cm long, bend in half and at the halfway mark shape it like a spoon head, big enough to fit around the foot when it is flat on the ground without rubbing the toes. Then bend the two ends up at the same angle as his leg, and cut them off so that they finish below the hock, or knee or elbow or whatever you want to call it Wrap elastoplast around the leg to fix the wire there, this provides support to the rest of the splint. Then put elastoplast around the toes and over the spoon end of the splint so all the toes are in the right places. This will enable him to continue walking and let the toe heal in the right spot. Sorry if that was really confusing!

May be a small piece of soft plastic poly tube slid over the toe and taped. At least the water won't affect it.

Hi Beck. I used a paddle pop but as the joint involved is so high up it's difficult keeping it in place. It does seem a little better at the moment I will give it another week and see
