Judy I was wondering if when eggs are posted, should we wait until the first candling at about 5 days before guessing, I say this because I lost 4 with air bubbles which were fertile and if incubated without posting would had a better chance of hatching. What do you think?

Thanks for your suggestion re candling, but I think as the information is supplied when the eggs are set eg posted from NSW etc, that members would take that into consideration when having an "educated guess" but it is important whoever is monitoring the competition to give as much information as possible. also thank you for monitoring the Feb 5th Hatch, great progress reports

Can I suggest we don't have candling reports. Firstly, it gives an advantage to anyone who makes a guess now. Secondly, I guessed 14, and someone else 15, so it looks already that we are wrong. I'd rather wait till they hatch to find that out. That way I enjoy the suspense longer. Or I suppose I could now cancel my first guess and make another one? I know it's all in fun and not serious, but others may feel the same way.

I kind of agree with Mike about the candling in that some of us who set eggs under broodies do not candle them. Well I dont anyways most of the time, I prefer to just leave the hen to it and then its more exciting when they do hatch because you dont know how many you're expecting. As for advantages to anyone who guesses now, you can modify your previous post Mike and I reckon we should be allowed to do that up until a certain point, eg maybe day 18.....but then again we wouldnt have to do that if we were only told how many eggs set and not advised how many are viable when candled.

I'm not going to change my guess, I've decided. I'm so supremely confident that I just think Lakelands got her candling wrong and I am going to totally ignore it, so there!

I'm with mike, if i didn't read about the candeling i would be happy with my guess (15) not changing just hope that the candeling was wrong. Either way i'm only in it for fun, not chook farms. But if you want to give me a chook farm, who am i to argue? LOL
