???Can anyone tell me at what age can you identify the sex of a Turkey. My young turk was purchased from Liz at Hearn Hill about four months ago and I have seen it display like a male about 1 month ago although it has not done it since and still looks very much like a female. Does anyone know if females diplay while they are young or do I just have a male on my hands?

You've doubtless been asked before by other newbies, but can turkeys easily be sexed?
My two are almost 13 weeks old, with one now being noticibly larger and also shows a snood(?) above it's beak.
Have I got one of each sex?
Thanks in anticipation,
Noel

What colour turkeys are they? The bronze females when they get their adult feathers have a rim of white/light brown on their chest feathers. The males breast feathers are pure black.
At about 16 - 20 weeks the male starts to grow his "beard". It is a tuft of strange looking coarse black hair which grows out about an inch below his neck skin and just above his crop (rather hard to describe the exact position). Very occasionally a female also grows a beard!!
The females have more feathers on their heads/faces than males who have mainly just skin.
The males have a larger flap of loose skin under their chins.
By about 18 - 20 weeks you should be able to tell the sex of your birds.

Thanks for the reply Steph I'll have a close look at her/him tomorrow after work. It is a bronze turkey so the info you have given me should be a great help. I will let you know how I go. Cheers Aaron

Having trouble uploading a piccie aaron? Have you read this from the FAQ board?: 1. Go to photobucket.com and set up an account (very basic and its free). 2. You will receive an email to confirm your account and to go to photobuckets home page to log in. 3. Select upload and choose the file you wish. 4. You will then see the photo you have selected, select skip this step, if you wish you can ad a title to the photo if you have not already done so. 5. Select the photo you wish to post in your message and then click on generate HTML and IMG code tag at the bottom of the page. This will then take you to a page with the HTML coding, please select Option 3 only, as this is for message boards as is automatically sized correctly. Copy and paste into your message and you are done.

Hi bhams, thanks for your help You've got some lovely looking birds in your photo album Yes, most people recommend that turkeys and chickens are not kept together as chickens can give the turkeys black head disease. But some people keep them together quite happily without any problems.

Hi, Thanks for the info Steph and bhams, My turk is in the same yard as my chooks at the moment as she was raised with some sussex,Spangled hamburg and japanese bantam chicks and has grown quite attached. I am currently building a large turkey and seperate Indian Runner enclosure so she will have to say goodbuy to her buddies. I will also try and find a mate for her in the near future. My collection seems to be growing out of control but I love it. Aaron
