I hatched a Wellsummer cockerel first week of January this year. It is on the smallish side and is constantly sitting down. It looks lethargic most of the time. While the other chicks have grown bigger and heavier, he is almost the same size for the last 6 weeks or so. He does walk around and eat and drink. He has a dirty bum from doing his business sitting down. I have wormed all of the birds but this has not improved his condition.
Does anyone have any ideas on what else I can do to improve his health?
I had an Australorp who wasn't doing so good so I gave him 1/2 a ml of Sulphadim with an equal amount of water everynight when he was asleep for 5 days and he's never looked back. I used a very small syringe and squirted it down his throat
So Chooky.... what the Status with your Chickens?... Went to Show yesterday... The Champion Light Sussex Rooster... wasn't as good or as big as either of mine!... a few nice hens... but nothing that stood out..... The Belgium Bantams... where just!., I think Sharon's little herd are a lot better!... My eggs are due out Saturday...:-) :-) :-)
New Belgian Millis all settled in & very happy!... no heat / light required .... in Dog Kennel with closed in pen/sun room....grass/lettuce/space, love the little roosters(3 months old)... 6 chickens 4 weeks old... you can see, they will develop, as look great...IMO...:-) :-)
Wheels fallen off Chooky... got a couple of chicks out late last night!.. bugga!!... a day & a half early.... so mucks up the hole process!!!.. so will have to work on plan B...... Sold the last of my Sussex Chicks yesterday...:-) :-) ... good as need the space.... New Belgian Chicks are out & about... no light required.... the Sussex Chicks where less then three week, due to their size & feathering DIDN'T need a lamp...& it's still cold at night, but in a warm place/kennel with yard....(to be picked up today)...:-) :-)
chooky just catching up on all this but I have had a few Wellsummers fall of the perch in a very short time for no reason at all any time from three weeks old to just point of lay no signs of anything on the bird at all they just give up
Sounds like Canker....suggest you try Malt Vinegar &/or Potassium Permanganate...((from chemist/vet supplies)... or a form of it...the chooks version!... ( not guru, just a cheap suggestion..)..:-) :-)
One of my Light Sussex chicks is developing a problem with it's leg. One leg is going out sideways. The knee joint is pointing inwards. Is there any way to fix this? I am trying the bandaid method to try to bring the leg back to the correct position. It doesn't seem to be working. Other than the leg the chick is doing fine. Growing nicely.
