It's warm but dry but I am getting a whole batch of chickens go down with what I think is cocci. I shifted them from a small box to the grower shed they are 7 to 8 weeks old and have gone from healthy to dying in less than 24 hours , I have recleaned the pen put in mown dry straw and on key start cocci med as well as just being fed chick starter that's medicated , I've lost count off how many have died but it is more than 10 .

That's very unusual. Have you had any chicks in the previous batches die of cocci in the grower shed? I have had chicks die of cocci but usually when it is wet. Have you had rain in the last couple days? Sometimes a bit of rain is all that is needed to activate the pathogens in the soil.

We only had a couple of drops but they were sick before the batch I had in before a couple looked sick when I had them in there but the med's made them all healthy quickly .they are on concrete , I did have it bad in there last summer and lost half of one batch and I had disinfected it with hydrogen peroxide , maybe I need to use an ammonia based disinfectant .

CK, Try my dad's method, fire. Burn something in the pen, nice and hot. That should kill anything in the pen and soil. Provided the pen itself will not burn down.

May be it is not cocci after all. Bird flu? They kill pretty fast too.

ck wow what a bummer do you lime you chook pens each year I do and i have not had any problems for a few years now I spread the lime all over the pens and scratch it in with a spade or fork then stick a load on top for good luck and let it do its thing it seems to clean up all the nasties good luck with it hope you save the rest of them

no I don't lime the pens I did try once a couple years back , they have the typical cocci pose tho chooky drooped wings ruffled feathers sunken eyes and head tucked in or under.

That's unusual ,do you have any DE or have you already tried that . there isn't anything that could have blown ,poison in the air? (puke)or something got on their feed.

When my dad had chooks, he was always very weary of mice getting into the feed because he says the mice droppings kill chooks. Do you have mice in your feed bins?

Mmm I was giving them DE but nearly out so had been giving it just to the older chooks. all feed stored in mouse proof containers but mice do live in the shed . only had 1 more die the others are picking up , lost all the silver laced wyandottes . the only breed that did not suffer much were the ancona's. I need to make a new pen for the chicks from Mr Perry's eggs I don't want to loose any of those I only got 2 boy's from the andalusians the rest are pullets.
