The Broody epidemic has hit our flock hard this year lol. At the moment we have 3 black Australorps and 1 blue broody. Has the epidemic hit anyone else's flocks? As result of this, egg production is at an all time low for this time of year. Only getting 2-3 eggs a day. Looks like we will be on egg rations for a while.

Update In the last week our broody total has deceased from 4 to 2 thankfully. Hopefully egg production will begin to increase in the next couple of weeks again.
rangerwa, We have three nest boxes for our flock which in theory should be adequate for a flock of seven hens and a roo. we do have another three boxes in the side of the coop that we do not use so we do have the option to add more boxes if need be.

chookboyandchookgirl thanks for the information that you have 3 nest boxes /which is great for your chickens if you wish them to go broodie /i would reduce the egg laying box to one /the more use that it gets the more unlike for your chickens tio go broodie /if they use the boxes to sleep in at night /then you may need build chicken house /in the cold mounths you can have loads of laying boxes i hope this will solve you problem /

Another broody! One less egg layer. Will have to debrood her. With the heat just round the corner. It wouldn't do her any good sitting. I think she needs to go for a drive.

you know this is a funny year even my old hens are going broody have not gone this way for a couple of years now kicking off younger hens to get at the eggs I still have 5 that are broody and sitting tight my worrie is that the hot will get the chicks if it come in quickly they do have loads of shade and the pens are fully reticulated but it still gets hot

I now have 2 broodies sharing a nest. Took the first for 2 car rides and broke her for about 24 hours. Now back on the nest. The second one decided that it must be nice sitting on the nest so she joined in. That's 50% of my layers. I am on the verge of giving in and getting them some eggs to sit on. The only concern is the heat.
