three and a half weeks ago I was asked if I had a broody "yep why" I have 14 Black leg horn eggs for my daughter I would like hatched if you do not mind No worries bring them over I stuck them under a walsummer and she went mad every time I went in her home "savage" the long of it was she never hatched out one single chick out of the 14 eggs, the Roo leghorn is only in with three hens so there should be a good hit rate and he is a young bird I am told so I am going to try in the bator to see if the roos is Ok or not nature is strange he could be a little to young I will have to find out first any suggestions Trev

I'm not having much luck with broodies this year either I chucked some in the bator and they hatched no problem - complete mystery An old Austrian guy once told me that if the nest isn't on sand (as in not in a nesting box) that if there is a thunderstorm, none of the eggs will hatch! Not buying into that one myself but maybe...... ;D

At the beginning of last month, I had 4 broodies sitting on around 30 eggs between them. In the following weeks, I've had flyblown eggs, exploding eggs, crushed eggs (thanks to clumsy stupid Speckled troll of a hen) and dead chicks (dying upon pipping, hatching and dead not long after hatching). Have had one successful chick who, touchwood, is going strong. There's 4 more eggs to go and I have everything crossed. My Jap girls (God bless their fluffy little souls!) on the other hand, have hatched 8 gorgeous happy littlies and surrogate-d 4 Light Sussex bubs. Praise Be For Bantams! My Muscovy girls hatched 7 out of 11 eggs and they're going great guns. And my nutty Pekin hen is on 4 eggs as well but don't know how she'll go. I've never had such a rubbish year for chicks as I have this year with my big girls. Talking to a friend who I lent my rooster to, he's had a rubbish year too. Last year Cranky sired 90 chicks out of 120 eggs and all going well and strong. This year, he's had chooks fighting over eggs, crushed eggs and flyblown chicks and only got 40 chicks to hatch successfully. Any answers? I thought with all this rain and heaps of green grass, the poultry would be pleased but not so....... (Mind you, harvest is up to mud. Frosted grain, black lupins and neighbours lost all their hay).

Hi trev Cannot believe you have only had 6 chicks. We got more than that out of the dozen eggs you gave us and we have a cheap manual incubator! Can so sympathize with the mechanical though. 2011 was definitely the year of the mechanic! roll on 2012
