I had 46 eggs in the incubator due today. We got home on christmas day at about 7pm and the incubator was at 103.7 degrees. I was so disappointed because I didn't know how long it had been that hot. The temp had been perfect till then. Anway I thought I would leave them and see what happens. Checked them last night and had pipping. So far this morning we have 12, 1 black aust x light sussex, 4 light sussex and 8 pekins. I've put the oldest 2 pekins out with Willow and her other 6 babies and she took them nicely. Tonight I will add more. How many do you think a pekin can look after in this weather? Its not as if they have to all be under her to keep warm.

pekins are quite miraculous at how many birds they will look after. i have had up to 20 odd chicks under a pekin, and one strange time, about 30 (a double storey cage, chicks had fallen from above to below, mum pekin was a terribly strange shape.................i thought the chicks were gone, but they were actually under mum pekin in the bottom cage............she was struggling) so the short of it is i think you could give them all to your willow.

thanks Jacquie, all that have hatched, about 14, are all healthy, touchwood, no crooked feet or any deformaties. maybe it only spiked for a short while. i have a friend coming to feed chooks and dog and incubator ones going to another friend in the brooder but they are soooo much easier long term to look after with a mamma so I'll see how many we end up with. and hope all works out well with the rcom50, when are they due?

This morning I added more chickies to Willow. She currently has 24 and looked a bit funny this morning with the new ones trying to get under her. Just checked them and everyone is either sleeping or scratching around and not even really near Willow. She is really calm and taking them all in. I have 3 more in the bator and not sure if any more will hatch. Am wondering if I should leave her as is or take the big chicks off her, thats 11 I think and just leave her with the bantams.
