Exciting times indeed Trev. I love this period when the eggs are hatching and then you see the Mums with their broods. I have two sisters in side by side pens with five chicks each. If they could get through the wire they'd fight to the death, they are each so protective of their own. I find that stage lasts about three weeks or so after which they can usually be allowed together, keeping their distance but still maintaining their separate spaces.

I have a medium size pony, built like a tank who doesn't like chickens around her hay. My mother hen Plymouth Rock was minding her own business when the pony thought she'd chase them away, bugger me but the hen stood up to the pony!! Fluffed herself up and made a growly noise. There was a stand off and they both went their separate ways.
I was really impressed.
