Sorry I haven't been participating for a while. I feel a bit guilty coming back because I have a problem. Some weeks ago a hen began walking oddly, lifting her left leg high. On examination she had a bare patch on her underside between her legs but nothing else was obvious. I pressed to see if there was a lump inside or anything else strange but found nothing. The odd walk grew worse but she still got around and seemed ok in most other ways. After a couple more inspections I left her for a while and then, when I picked her up again, found a hole in her underbelly. It was like a knife slash, about 10 cm long and it was black and clearly infected. I put her out of her misery and buried the body. I wish now I had dissected it and tried to find out what it was because my rooster has developed the same odd walk. I've looked in all the books and can find nothing remotely like it. Any ideas?

Have you had a good look in the pen sometimes there is a sharp bit you have not noticed hiding they could be hitting themselves on it unintentionally could be worth a look Trev

Caught the rooster today and found a large lump on its underside with what appeared to be a piece of bone or calcified material sticking out from the inside. Can only think it is a cancerous growth of some kind so have put the bird down. Will clean out the shed and pen and watch the rest of the hens very carefully. It's possible the rooster was the son of the hen that had the same thing. Possibly genetic?

Good luck with that one to me it seems unlikely that's its a hereditary problem it could have started from a small cut and got infected and full of puss and over time got the way it did I have watch some nastie things go wrong with birds trev
