Would anyone who has multiple breeds care to share tips and photos of how they have their pens set up to keep breeds/colours separated.
Thanks
Michelle

I have basically the same as Trev. I also have a grower pen and 2 spare pens for select breeding plus a free for all pen where I put hens I am not breeding with at the time.

Thanks Trev and Rena! They will have a large free range area, fenced and attached to the secure yard, but will have to either only let all the hens out together or let them out one pen at a time.
LOL trying to work out a design (within the rectangle predator proof compound) that allows me to add more pens in future without wasting fencing materials:)

I have 8 breeding pens that are back to back with 4 on each site and a run on each site. I let one breed at a time into each of the runs . I also have another 2 large runs 1 for hens and 1 for roos when they are not in the breeding pens plus I have a couple of other coops that have the run of the rest of the property which I keep the younger birds and some silkies and pekins I think it may be a bit difficult to just let the hens out and leave the roos locked up as once you open the door to the pen they will all be busting to get out including the roos so trying to keep the roos in may proove a bit challenging good luck and would love to see some photos when you get is all finished

I have two paths in a T shape with pens along each side of the path. Inside the larger pens I have smaller pens which can be left open or closed off if I want to confine a mother and chicks or a sick bird. All the larger pens have access to the paths and along to a fenced orchard where they range, or to other areas, like a lawn where I let them feed when I am close by and watching they don't stray into flower beds. I have only two breeds with two roosters - one for each - and I let one breed out in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Occasionaly I herd the roosters into smaller pens and then let all the hens out together, especially now when the orchard has so many weeds growing in it!

I have two breeding pens and a mixture pen. Then I have 2 brooding pens, 2 small round pens so chicks out of the incubator can go out in the fresh air when the day is hot and they don't need the light so much. I also have a small multipurpose pen which is housing a brooding hen a the moment. Each pen has its day out, so they all get to free range every 3rd day.
I have on order from my handy dad (as I don't have a handy husband) another pen for my daughter's silkies and another brooding/bringing up the littlies pen.

Geez Trev, you need to be carefull. I sympathise with you though, I have scratches and cuts all over my feet and legs and blisters on 1 finger, not sure how I got them but obviously I've been active and clumsy.

Then there was the time when I was using a power sander and it got caught in my jumper and nearly sanded off my pot belly ..... or the time I cut through a wire with a kitchen knife and discovered it was live ... or ..... just to tell you you're not an orphan Trev. Mike
