Hi all, i just wanted to make sure im doing the correct thing, i have some scaley leg mite in my rose-combs, its a fairly bad case, witch i have only been able to treat yesterday (due to some unforseen vet bills and visits for the doggies). so yesterday i caught them all and gave two drops of frontline, and smothered their legs with vaseline (thought it might help out for a bad case) so my question is am i doing all the correct things? and how long will it take for the frontline to kill the mites??
thanks for any and all help you can give me.

Hi Chickita,
I foolishly brought home a rooster that I fell in love with and he had very bad scaley let mites. I tried all of the usual vaseline/oil treatments without success, it was just too severe. I don't know about frontline but revolution has been recommended to me. In the end I treated him with human scabies lotion available from the chemist. It gave him instant relief, used it several times and they haven't recurred. Apparently the scales won't look flat until he moults again, and will maybe not ever be perfect again. This lotion is very cheap to buy.
Good luck.

HI Chickita I know guys that use a front line spray on the legs I use a penetrating oil it last a long time water will not wash it off and it fixes them up some times I may need to give them two sprays but never had to give three after a while the legs go back to normal and the scales flatten out nicely Trev

How often would you use the frontline treatment? Once a month, every three months? I know I use it on the dogs and cats on a monthly basis. I give my girls a small spray on thre back of their necks. Is that correct? Thanks linda

with mine i usualy do it when i seen signs of stick fasts (they have been our main pain), witch since i have been doing it i have only done the pekins twice in their lives (13months old now i got them at 3months) so sometimes its four months or more between for the bigger chickens as they free range 4ac and the pekins have about 1ac to roam, i think the bigger chooks pick it up from the wild birds more than the pekins get them (i assume the wild birds dont want to hang around the house as much because of the noise). this however is the first time ive had scaley, i think one of the cockrels brought it in!

I've had heaps of success using moxidectin for scaly leg mite and fleas, mites, etc! HEAPS easier to use (I don't really want to run around and catch ALL my chookies! ) - just put it in their water and - viola! Works out cheaper too! ETA - I think it has the same active ingredient as frontline too!

thank you , i really need to see my vet for the ivermectin/moxydectin, but i thought for now the frontline should help out, i dont mind catching the bants (altought the rose combs have not been as well handled) the pekin's are super easy, but i really babied them haha

I use a thing called L10 oil, but the WD 40 would do it kills off the mite under the scales softens the scales and they move back as the should do. Once done I really have to do it again. I have a RIR Rooster I did when we got him 5 years ago he must be 8 now he still looks like new ;D ;D ;D Trev

Hi Everyone With my moxidectin plus. I make up the liquid and pour it onto cut up grainy bread and divide the bread it into a couple of containers and put it in the pens and in 10 minutes its all gone and all the girls have been wormed. In summer i use a cheap watermelon and do the same process. This is much easier than putting moxi in the water. I hope this helps. Cheers Linda

Hi Trev, I gave my rooster a quick go with WD40 last night, how long before I do it again or see any improvement? Are they really contagious, should I keep an eye on my other birds? Lloyd
