Hi everyone! I have a quick question about eating your backyard chooks. My OH is interested in using our excess roosters as table birds as we're not happy with the price and quality of the chooks in the shop. The only thing is - we don't have a plucker and it takes ages to pluck a bird (plus I don't wanna do it! I don't eat 'em either!) - does anyone know of a poultry abbatoir that would do it for you? Also would be interested to know if anyone else eats their own chooks and what sort of chooks - we have light sussex. Ok, so that wasn't so quick! Sorry! Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, you can have birds processed in Malaga but there may be a limit on how many you have to have for processing. I am going to ring them during the week so I will ask.

Thankyou! I am a bit south of the river though - a bit past Byford - Judes if you are going to ring and find out a minimum nuber that would be great! Don't really want to travel NOR for 1 bird! Thanks for your help!

Baldivis Poultry Processors (I think that is what they are called) you can take birds there but they are only opened in the latter part of the year. I did ring them earlier in the year but cant remeber the exact opening times. Sorry!!

Thanks horses7! That is MUCH closer to me! It's not the same place as WA poultry supplies is it? I know that's in Baldivis. Have you ever used them to process your own birds? Do you have a vauge idea of the price? Sorry about all the questions! Thanks!

Ok, I rang them, they are indeed Baldivis Poultry Processors and they do process private birds! They are happy to do any type of poultry, from chooks, ducks, turkeys, etc and charge $5 per bird up to 3kg (dressed weight) - a little extra for bigger. There is no minimun number, but you have to have them there before 9am - pickup after 2pm on Wednesdays - oh and they ask that you ring first. So thankyou for that! It was just what I was after and I hope this helps others too! Cheers!

I just rang Prestige Poultry in Wangara. They aren't taking any private birds at the moment, maybe in a month. They charge $2.70 per bird.

I don't think there has to be a minimum age?? Obviously you wouldn't take little babies there, but I suppose if they're your birds you can choose what age?

You don't need to pluck your chickens.Remove head feet and wing tips first. Just cut the skin on the breast and peel the skin and feathers off in one go.
