Does anyone know about surgery to silence Roosters, I cant bear to part with my Polish ,He has hair like a punkrocker(does any one know what that breed is called) We are just curious as he is only 25 weeks old but I dont want neighbours complaining so education is the key, my other girls are doing really well thanks Donna

Hi Donna, if you can keep him in the shed until about 8.30 -9am each morning and then let him out, you may not get complaints from neighbors. I have been doing this with my pekin roos and so far so good. I put them in our old portacot for the night I know there is procedures but it is illegal and can cause the death of the bird quite easily.

Hi Donna, try ringing around for an avian vet, they might be able to help you, I've heard of procedures involving eastrogen hormones being given to the rooster to stop the crow, but I've also heard of an operation called decrowing, either way a vet that specialises in poultry would give the best advice. They could also give you the advice on what is ilegal, aswell as I'm unsure, what duckdiva has suggessted does work as I've done it my self, it keeps the roo quiet, and keeps him safe, doing that you shouldn't get any problems from neighbours, as usually the complaints are about the time of morning that thr crowing starts. Good luck with what ever you decide.

good luck Donna i hope you find a solution and let me know i too have had neighbour problems but as i start work at approx 4:30 i cannot box them till late and am currently working on a auto box lifter with a timer !! with a sparky friend so exciting i just hope we can come up with something !!!! but let us know if you discover anything it will help alot of people and i will try a few vets too the problem is they do deem it cruel although it its quite often that or the axe and hey they will cut off a dogs nu%s and dew claw them and say it is for the best so i don't see the difference as long as the animal has a good life !!

hi guys, very interesting, i would love to be able to keep a rooster, whats the theory behind keeping them in the shed overnight, to stop the light i figure.the auto timer sounds like a winner, but how to separate the girls from the boys?? what if i made a light proof sleeping quarters for all and kept them in till light, could it stop the rooster from crowing

Hi Millipede, the reason I keep my roos in the shed is that the neighbors cant hear them crowing first thing in the morning and neither can we!! Hopefully we will get to keep the roos as our shire has a no rooster policy. By not upsetting the neighbors hopefully = no complaints. Cheers, Wendy

I know of some people who regularly get roosters "Decrowed", and have had success with it, though it does involve risk. It is a bit odd because they still try to crow afterwards but no sound comes out! So there is definitely a vet in Perth who does it, the people I know who have had it done are in Cloverdale so maybe the vet is in that area. There are different methods of doing it, apparently one is more harsh than the other and does not always go well for the rooster...

Yes and once the young ones start, the older ones crow more to put them in their place! It gets a bit noisy.
