G'day All I have just registered on this wonderful site and want to set=up to have chickens at home. My fiancee is from Israel and grew up on a kibbutz I am trying to make it is as much like her home as possible here in the west We just spent sometime on a kibbutz and freshly laid eggs are amazing I would like to surprise her by purchasing a chicken coop, with what is needed for the hens to lay eggs We will also need the right breed of chicken, which I will need help to learn the breed to suit us We have a massive backyard in Belmont, that the chickens can sometimes be free range, but would have to be put in at night Probably looking for 4-6 hens, coop, nesting boxes, advice on feeding and upkeep etc If any one is happy to help, it would be much appreciated I would like to buy a coop because time restrictions restrain me from time to build one Have looked in the quokka for weeks but rarely do I see coops in there, if so they go quickly Look forward to some advice Thank you JR

Hi jr,
Depends on your budget...
You could try city farmers (93 belmont ave belmont) They have some larger sized coops that would suit 4-6 chooks with nesting box copartment. Check local council for bi-laws (most don't allow roosters on residential blocks). In terms of breeds to keep, it depends on you. Most are easy to keep and fun... Good luck. Keep us posted on coop hunt

Hi Guru Welcome to WAP! Im sure once you get you coop there will be someone on this forum with some delightful chookies to put in it Of course we'll also help you learn about what to feed them and how to look after your girls. It would depend on what age you get them as to what to start off feeding them. Nesting boxes can be built or if you dont mind recycling, you can use small drums, lawnmower catchers, small kennels or whatever. the possibilities are endless. I built my duck pen by myself in an hour, but I bought an old shed from the tip for a house. The fence is made from very tall steel pickets and chicken wire attached with cable ties. I put fresh straw down which gets used on the garden when it gets mucky (which is pretty often with the ducks) lol Good luck with it all and I hope your fiance loves her new home in Perth Cheers, Wendy.

Hi Guru. Welcome to WAP I have seen some great and not too expensive portable chicken coops at better pets and gardens. These are located all around perth so you should be able to find one close to where-ever you live. Let us know how you get on as I am sure some one on this site will be able to supply you with some hens to put in the coop and all the advice you need to get started. I hope your fiance likes it in Perth good luck

A lot of chickens are not laying this time of year. They need a certain number of daylight hours. Don't worry they will lay. We have Gold Laced Wyandottes and in season they lay well. Good luck with your venture and welcome to the roost.
